McCullum to step down as England Test Coach, remain in White-Ball role

London, 12 July 2026:

Brendon McCullum will step down as head coach of England’s men’s Test team but will continue leading the country’s white-ball sides, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced on ecb.co.uk.

McCullum’s four-year tenure with the Test team will end as the ECB begins its search for a new coach ahead of next summer’s Ashes series.

The former New Zealand captain oversaw one of the most aggressive and entertaining periods in England’s Test history, helping transform the team’s mentality and style of play.

“Brendon breathed new life into England Men’s Test team during an exciting period which saw some amazing victories, and we’re grateful for all he has given to the role,” ECB chief executive Richard Gould said.

“We now believe that the time is right to make a change for the Test team as we target victory in The Ashes next summer.”

McCullum will remain in charge of England’s one-day international and Twenty20 teams. England reached the semifinals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year and recently defeated India 4-0 to move to the top of the world T20 rankings.

England men’s managing director Rob Key praised McCullum’s influence on the Test side and the development of younger players.

“Some of England’s most memorable moments in recent history have occurred under Brendon’s leadership of the Test team,” Key said.

“It’s been an absolute privilege to watch him shape the mentality of the team, to one the players have loved, and see him develop a new generation of talent who will be at the heart of England Men’s teams for years to come.”

McCullum said he was disappointed but respected the ECB’s decision.

“I’ve absolutely loved coaching the Test side and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together,” McCullum said. “There’ve been some unbelievable highs and a few tough days along the way, but that’s all part of taking on a challenge like this.”

McCullum thanked the players, staff and supporters before turning his attention to the white-ball teams.

“Of course I’m gutted not to be continuing, but I respect the decision,” he said. “My focus now is on giving everything I’ve got to the white-ball teams and helping England keep moving forward.”

The ECB said the recruitment process for England’s next Test head coach will begin immediately.
