London, 12 July 2026:
England coach Brendon McCullum allowed his players to have a celebratory beer after their 4-0 Twenty20 series win over India, despite guidance recommending players avoid alcohol.
England introduced an alcohol policy between the first and second Tests against New Zealand following incidents. The guidance advises players not to drink, including the day after a match, although the coach can grant permission.
McCullum did so Saturday after England completed a series victory that moved the team above India to No. 1 in T20 rankings.
“Anyone that wants a beer can have a beer,” McCullum said, adding that few England players drink. He said the policy was intended to protect players and encourage responsible decisions, but that success should be enjoyed sensibly.
“I trust the players completely,” McCullum said. “We’ll have a quiet beer and just let this one land — just as long as no one lands on the front page.”
The victory boosted England after its Test series defeat to New Zealand, Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket and pressure on McCullum.
McCullum declined to discuss his future or identify a candidate for the Test captaincy. However, he praised white-ball captain Harry Brook, a leading contender to succeed Stokes.
Brook impressed with the bat and as captain against India. McCullum said the 27-year-old had matured since an incident in Wellington in November, when he was punched by a nightclub bouncer.
McCullum said Brook had acknowledged mistakes and better understood the responsibilities that come with his profile.
“The growth I have seen in him since the Wellington incident, not only as a person but within the dressing room, has been immense,” McCullum said.
Brook will captain England in the one-day international series against India, beginning Tuesday in Birmingham. McCullum praised his tactical awareness, intelligence and influence as a leader.
