Los Angeles Knight Riders captured their first Major League Cricket championship with a dramatic one-run victory over Washington Freedom in the 2026 final at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday.
Playing in their first MLC final after missing the playoffs in each of the previous three seasons, the Knight Riders completed a remarkable turnaround, finishing the campaign with eight victories and lifting the franchise’s maiden title before a crowd of more than 10,000.
Defending 164, Los Angeles survived a tense finish after Washington required 14 runs from the final over. Shadley van Schalkwyk was hit for a six by Obus Pienaar on the opening delivery, bringing up Pienaar’s maiden T20 half-century, but responded superbly. He yorked Pienaar with the next ball before dismissing Ian Holland on the following delivery.
Lockie Ferguson struck a boundary to leave Washington needing four runs from the final two balls, but Van Schalkwyk conceded only singles to seal victory by the narrowest of margins. Lahiru Milantha was run out attempting a second run off the final ball that would have forced a Super Over.
Earlier, Los Angeles posted 164 after being sent in to bat. Andre Fletcher led the charge with 47 off 27 balls, dominating the powerplay with aggressive strokeplay against Ben Dwarshuis and Ferguson. Fletcher helped the Knight Riders reach 54 during the first six overs, contributing 38 of those runs.
Nikhil Chaudhary halted the early momentum by dismissing Fletcher with a well-disguised wrong’un before removing Andre Russell for a first-ball duck later in the same over. Colin Munro briefly counterattacked with three consecutive sixes off Chaudhary but fell for 40 when Rachin Ravindra induced a catch at long-off. Ravindra also dismissed Sunil Narine for a duck as Los Angeles slipped to 111-4 in the 12th over.
Matthew Tromp then provided the late impetus with a fluent 39, attacking the spinners to guide the Knight Riders past the 160-run mark. Dwarshuis finished as Washington’s most successful bowler with 3-31, while Ravindra, Chaudhary and Owen claimed two wickets each.
Washington appeared firmly in control at the halfway stage, but Narine produced another outstanding new-ball spell. The veteran offspinner removed Mitchell Owen, Steven Smith and Ravindra during the powerplay to reduce the chase to 41-3. He finished with figures of 3-13, continuing a tournament in which the majority of his wickets came inside the first six overs.
Andries Gous and Chaudhary rebuilt the innings with a 65-run partnership before Jason Holder swung the match back in Los Angeles’ favor. Holder dismissed Chaudhary to claim his 400th career T20 wicket before removing Dwarshuis and Gous to leave Washington struggling at 109-6.
Pienaar kept Freedom alive with an aggressive unbeaten 53, striking successive boundaries and sixes during the closing overs. He took 14 runs from Ali Khan in the penultimate over after earlier hitting Van Schalkwyk for two sixes, setting up the tense finish.
Despite conceding 38 runs in his first three overs, Van Schalkwyk delivered under pressure with a series of pinpoint yorkers in the final over to secure the championship and complete a memorable season for the Knight Riders. The South African-born pacer, who recently moved to the United States, added the MLC title to his Minor League Cricket triumph.
