Bradman’s baggy green sold for over $400,000

Canberra, 29 August 2025:

A baggy green cap worn by Sir Donald Bradman during the 1946-47 Ashes has been purchased by the National Museum of Australia for AU$438,500 (about US$286,700), with the federal government covering half the cost.

Bradman captained Australia in that postwar series, which his side won 3-0, setting the stage for the unbeaten “Invincibles” tour of England in 1948.

Arts Minister Tony Burke said the acquisition secures “an important piece of national history” for future generations. “Now to have one of his iconic baggy greens in the National Museum of Australia means visitors will have the opportunity to connect with our sporting and cultural history,” he said.

Only 11 of Bradman’s caps are known to exist. One is held by the Australian Sports Museum, while the rest remain in private hands.

The cap will join other Bradman memorabilia in the museum’s Landmarks gallery, which showcases defining moments in Australia’s history.
