Darwin, 11 July 2026:
Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon says the national side is excited to return to the Northern Territory as Darwin prepares to host its first Test match in 22 years.
Australia will face Bangladesh in the opening Test of the two-match series from 13 August, with Lyon describing the occasion as a significant moment for cricket in the Top End.
“It’s been amazing. I’ve only been in the Territory for about three hours, but the welcome and the vibe I’m getting from everyone has been incredible,” Lyon said during a media interaction in Darwin.
“Speaking on behalf of the Australian cricket team, we’re very excited to get up here. The first Test match back here in 22 years is pretty special.”
The 38-year-old, who has taken 567 wickets in 141 Tests at an average of 30.15, is looking forward to bowling in conditions traditionally regarded as favourable for spin.
Lyon recalled attending a spin camp in Darwin in 2016 ahead of Australia’s tour of Bangladesh and said returning for a Test would be memorable.
“Gav has already told me it’s going to be a five-day Test match, so hopefully that means a few more overs for myself,” he said.
Lyon also highlighted the importance of bringing international cricket to the region, particularly for young players across Darwin and the Northern Territory.
“It’s massive to come up here, play in front of kids and try to inspire the next generation,” he said.
“If we can inspire young people to chase their dreams and show that being from Darwin or the Northern Territory is no barrier to representing your state or country, that is incredibly important.”
Lyon added that playing Test cricket at home in August would be unusual but exciting, saying Australia were keen to make the most of the historic occasion.
