Orla Prendergast produced a match-winning all-round performance as Ireland Women defeated West Indies Women by six wickets in their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Group 2 match on Saturday.
Ireland, after winning the toss and choosing to field, restricted West Indies to 128-7 in 20 overs. Chinelle Henry led the scoring with an unbeaten 27, while Hayley Matthews made 22 and Deandra Dottin contributed 21.
Ireland’s bowlers kept West Indies in check throughout the innings. Cara Murray returned impressive figures of 2-13 from four overs, while Aimee Maguire took 2-22. Prendergast, Arlene Kelly and Jane Maguire picked up one wicket each.
In reply, Ireland reached 129-4 in 18.1 overs, winning with 11 balls to spare. Prendergast led the chase with a fluent 63 off 44 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes. She shared a key second-wicket stand with Amy Hunter, who made 28.
Although Prendergast fell with Ireland needing 21 more, Rebecca Stokell stayed unbeaten on 16 to guide the side home. Ashmini Munisar took 2-28 for West Indies, while Matthews and Afy Fletcher claimed one wicket each.
Prendergast was named player of the match for her 63, 1-29 and two catches.
