Pakistan selectors back domestic pathway, defend young player selections

Lahore, 14 March 2026:

Pakistan’s selection committee said Saturday that recent squad choices were based on long-term domestic performance and team balance, defending the inclusion of younger players ahead of more experienced names.

Selector Aqib Javed said the panel evaluates players across formats and seasons rather than relying on short-term form.

“You cannot select a player after just one tournament. We look at performances over two years, across four-day, List A and T20 cricket, and then decide what the team needs,” Aqib told reporters at Gaddafi Stadium.

The committee, which also includes Sarfaraz Ahmed, said wicketkeeper selections were made after reviewing both statistics and team requirements.

Sarfaraz said multiple keepers remain in the system but choices depend on current form and role in the side.

“We have several wicketkeepers in the pipeline. We look at current form, team combination and who can bat in the required position. The decision is made after discussion and performance review,” he said.

Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq added that selectors must sometimes fast-track players if the team lacks options in a specific role.

“If the team needs a player in a certain category, you have to look at domestic cricket, potential and future requirements. Sometimes you have to develop players for the next cycle,” Misbah said.

Selectors also said Pakistan’s revamped analysis system allows them to monitor players without always attending matches in person.

“With the current data and video system, every match is recorded. We can review performances ball by ball, which helps in making more informed decisions,” Aqib said.

The committee said the current selection strategy is aimed at building a larger player pool as Pakistan prepares for upcoming international tournaments.
