Jamie Overton produced a decisive all-round performance as Adelaide Strikers edged Sydney Sixers by three wickets with four balls to spare in the fourth match of the Big Bash League at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday night.
Chasing 160, the Strikers were guided by a composed half-century from Liam Scott and late impetus from Overton before Luke Wood finished the job unbeaten. The win gave Adelaide their first points of the season, while the Sixers were left to rue missed chances in the field.
Scott anchored the chase with 51 off 32 balls, striking three fours and three sixes to steady the Strikers after early wickets. Overton then added a brisk 30 from 20 deliveries, sharing a key stand that swung momentum Adelaide’s way. When Overton fell in the 19th over with six still required, Wood (18 not out) and Hasan Ali (4 not out) calmly closed out the chase at 160 for 7 in 19.2 overs.
Earlier, the Sixers posted 159 for 9 after being sent in. Josh Philippe provided the backbone of the innings with a fluent 46 off 28 balls, while Jack Edwards chipped in with 32 from 21. Babar Azam, opening for Sydney, made 9 before edging Luke Wood behind in the third over.
The Strikers’ bowling was led by Wood, who claimed 3 for 26, and Overton, who returned figures of 2 for 22 and took two sharp catches in the field. Henry Thornton and Lloyd Pope also struck at key moments to prevent the Sixers from building sustained partnerships.
Sydney slipped from 94 for 2 to 121 for 6, losing wickets in a cluster through the middle overs, and were unable to accelerate at the death despite late cameos from Ben Dwarshuis and the lower order.
Overton was named player of the match for his impact with both bat and ball as Adelaide sealed a tight contest under lights in Sydney.
