Hazlewood’s Ashes campaign in doubt after new achilles injury

Brisbane, 5 December 2025:

Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has suffered a fresh injury setback, placing his Ashes availability under renewed uncertainty. Cricket Australia on Friday confirmed the right-armer is dealing with a low-grade Achilles issue sustained during his rehabilitation from a recent hamstring injury.

Hazlewood picked up the hamstring strain last month while playing a Sheffield Shield match for New South Wales and had already been ruled out of the first two Tests against England. He had been scheduled to join the squad in Brisbane to continue his recovery, but the trip was cancelled following the latest setback. He will remain in Sydney for treatment.

While no timeline has been set for his return, Cricket Australia said Hazlewood is expected to resume running and bowling next week. The third Test begins December 17, but there are growing concerns he may not be ready until the Boxing Day Test or possibly later.

“Josh Hazlewood reported Achilles soreness this week during his rehabilitation from a recent hamstring injury,” a CA spokesperson said. “It is a low-grade issue and he is expected to recommence running and bowling next week.”

Hazlewood has bowled in the nets in recent weeks, but the latest injury has again cast doubt over his role in the remainder of the series.
