Boland shrugs off Barbs as Ashes Test Looms

Melbourne, 21 October 2025:

Scott Boland may be called on to bowl in all five Ashes Tests this summer, a challenge that will test both his endurance and resolve. But even before the first ball is bowled, the fast bowler is already handling the heat off the field.

The Gulidjan man was in Melbourne on Tuesday to launch a partnership between the Melbourne Cricket Club and the National Indigenous Cricket Championships. Yet, questions quickly turned from community cricket to comments from England greats questioning Australia’s strength.

“All the past players are going to come out and have their opinion, and they can do that,” Boland said. “We’re just going to concentrate on playing our cricket.”

The 36-year-old pacer has already had to parry verbal bouncers from the English press. Former England captain Mike Atherton recently suggested Boland was a weak replacement for Pat Cummins, who is expected to miss at least the first Test in Perth on Nov. 21 due to a back injury.

Rather than using such remarks as motivation, Boland said he remains focused on his own standards. “It’s not really about showing my skills against them,” he said. “I believe in my skills — it’s just about putting out a really good performance.”

Boland is likely to play a key role alongside Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who this week said he was ready to feature in all five Tests. Boland said he also feels capable of managing the workload, especially with a longer break after the opening two matches.

“I’ve never had major injuries, but these little niggles pop up,” Boland said. “I think I’m getting better at managing them as we go.”

He avoided weighing in on Australia’s batting selections but praised young batter Sam Konstas, who he dismissed for a duck in a recent Sheffield Shield match. “He’s still finding his feet, but you can see how talented he is,” Boland said.

Although he hasn’t yet been confirmed in Australia’s squad, Boland admitted his thoughts are already drifting toward the Ashes opener. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about what’s coming up this summer,” he said. “There’s nothing better than being part of an Australian Test summer.”
