Steve Smith’s New York breaks keeping him fresh for Ashes run

Sydney, 21 October 2025:

Steve Smith believes his pre-seasons spent in New York are giving him the perfect tonic to stay fresh and score runs deep into the Ashes summer.

The former Australia captain returned to Sydney last week after six weeks in the United States and after not picking up a bat since late August, saying the break has left him mentally recharged and ready for another big season.

Often known for his obsessive cricket habits, Smith has taken a “less-is-more” approach in recent years, which he says helps him perform consistently through the long Australian summer.

“I certainly get drained mentally quicker than I used to,” Smith said Tuesday. “Ten years ago I loved playing every single game I could. Now Test cricket has taken huge priority.

“I know that when I play a lot early, by the end of the summer I’m pretty cooked mentally and can’t produce the same performances. Last year I was probably batting my best at the back end against India, after not playing much early on.”

The 36-year-old had his first outdoor net session of the summer this week in Sydney, saying it took only “two hits” to feel ready for the season, which includes two Sheffield Shield games before the first Test on Nov. 21.

“Honestly, it takes me two hits to get sorted,” Smith said. “Technically I’m in a good place. For me it’s about staying mentally fresh and being able to concentrate for long periods.”

Smith’s new rhythm could help extend his career, though he said he would reassess his future after this summer.

The right-hander is also likely to lead Australia in the opening Test against England in Perth, with regular captain Pat Cummins yet to resume bowling.

Smith said he feels more relaxed now than during his full-time captaincy stint from 2013 to 2017 and that the responsibility tends to lift his batting.

“It’s interesting how the brain works,” he said. “I feel like I go to another level and try to set a standard.”
