Perth, 17 October 2025:
Cameron Green’s return to bowling has hit a setback, with the all-rounder ruled out of Australia’s ODI series against India due to side soreness.
Cricket Australia said Friday the injury was “low grade” and that Green’s absence from the three-match series is precautionary. The 26-year-old is expected to be fit for Western Australia’s next Sheffield Shield game on Oct. 28 as planned.
Australia’s selectors are taking no risks with Green ahead of a busy home summer, with his full return as an all-rounder considered vital for the Ashes against England beginning next month.
Marnus Labuschagne, who scored his fourth century of the domestic season for Queensland on Thursday, has been called up as Green’s replacement. Labuschagne was initially left out of the squad after low scores in South Africa in August but will join the team in Perth following Queensland’s Shield match in Adelaide.
A Cricket Australia spokesperson said Green first reported discomfort during training earlier this week.
“Green will complete a short rehabilitation period and is tracking to return in round three of the Sheffield Shield to continue his preparation for the Ashes,” CA said in a statement.
Although minor, Green’s injury adds to Australia’s concerns ahead of the Test series against England starting Nov. 21 in Perth. Captain Pat Cummins remains doubtful for the opener as he recovers from back stress, while Sean Abbott (hand), Brendan Doggett (hamstring) and Jhye Richardson (shoulder) are also managing injuries.
Since his surgery, Green has gradually increased his bowling workload. He resumed bowling drills in London in June before the World Test Championship final and featured as a specialist batter during tours of South Africa and the West Indies, as well as the August white-ball series in South Africa.
He skipped this month’s T20 tour of New Zealand to play red-ball cricket for WA and had already been omitted from the T20I series against India following the ODIs to focus on longer formats ahead of the Ashes.
Green’s withdrawal is the third change for Sunday’s ODI opener. Josh Philippe replaces wicket-keeper Josh Inglis, who has a calf strain, while Matthew Kuhnemann comes in for Adam Zampa, who is unavailable for family reasons.
Labuschagne is expected to slot straight into the XI after a strong domestic run, including two one-day centuries, 130 against Victoria and 105 against Tasmania. Green’s absence could also open the door for Matthew Renshaw to bat at No. 4, a role in which he averages 50 with a strike rate above 100 in the past four One-Day Cup seasons.
Labuschagne, who scored 159 in the current Shield match against South Australia, is also pushing for a Test recall for the Ashes opener.
