Shubman Gill named India’s new ODI Captain for Australia Series

Mumbai, 4 October 2025:

Shubman Gill has been appointed India’s new one-day international captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma for the upcoming three-match series in Australia. It will be Gill’s first assignment as ODI skipper after previously leading India in Tests and T20Is. The change comes as India begins to build toward the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India also announced the squads for both the ODI and T20I series. The five-match T20I leg, which follows the ODIs, is largely similar to the squad that featured in the recently concluded Asia Cup.

ODI squad: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vice captain), Axar Patel, KL Rahul (wk), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Despite being replaced as captain, Rohit returns to the ODI squad along with Virat Kohli. Both senior batters have not featured for India since the Champions Trophy final in March. Shreyas Iyer has been named vice captain.

Gill, 26, has limited leadership experience in the 50-over format, having captained only six List A matches with a 5-1 record. Earlier this year, he led India to a 2-2 Test series draw against England and followed that with an innings-and-140-run win over the West Indies.

In 55 ODIs, Gill has scored 2,775 runs with eight centuries.

The 15-member ODI squad also includes KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel as batters. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel form the all-round unit, while Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana lead the pace attack. Kuldeep Yadav is the sole wrist-spinner.

From India’s Champions Trophy 2025 lineup, Ravindra Jadeja has been omitted, while Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant are recovering from injuries. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested.

Hardik Pandya to Miss T20Is Due to Injury

The T20I squad mirrors the Asia Cup lineup, with a few changes. Pandya, who injured himself during the Asia Cup Super Fours match against Sri Lanka, remains unavailable and has been replaced by Nitish Kumar Reddy. Washington Sundar also returns to the T20I setup.

Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the T20I side, with Gill serving as vice captain.

T20I squad: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill (vice captain), Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Sanju Samson (wk), Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar.

The tour begins with three ODIs from Oct. 19-25, followed by five T20Is from Oct. 29-Nov. 8.
