Hobart, 17 December 2025:
Chris Jordan capped a decisive all-round performance as Hobart Hurricanes pulled off a tense four-wicket victory over Sydney Thunder with one ball remaining in Match 3 of the Big Bash League on Tuesday night.
Chasing 181, the Hurricanes reached 181 for 6 in 19.5 overs at Bellerive Oval, with Jordan holding his nerve at the finish to be unbeaten on 16 off 13 balls. Earlier, the England seamer had played a key role with the ball, taking 2 for 36 to restrict the Thunder to 180 for 6, earning him player of the match honors.
The chase was set up by aggressive starts from Mitchell Owen and a solid middle-order contribution. Owen blasted 32 off just 14 balls, striking six fours and a six to give Hobart early momentum. Nikhil Chaudhary steadied the innings with a composed 41 off 31 deliveries, while Ben McDermott added impetus with a brisk 38 from 24 balls.
Sydney fought back through Shadab Khan, who claimed 2 for 36, and Tanveer Sangha, whose tidy spell of 1 for 26 kept the contest alive. Late wickets, including that of Matthew Wade for 25, dragged the match deep, but Jordan and captain Nathan Ellis calmly guided the Hurricanes home.
Earlier, Thunder built their total around Cameron Bancroft’s well-paced 61 off 44 balls. Bancroft anchored the innings after an explosive start from Matthew Gilkes, who smashed 20 off seven balls. Shadab Khan provided late acceleration with 34 from 24 deliveries, lifting Sydney to a competitive score.
Billy Stanlake was the standout with the ball for Hobart, removing three top-order batters on his way to figures of 3 for 34, while Jordan struck at key moments to apply the brakes.
The win handed the Hurricanes their first points of the season, while Sydney Thunder were left empty-handed after a closely fought contest under lights in Hobart.
