Bangladesh cricketer Sabir Rahman is viewing the Top End T20 Series in Darwin as an opportunity to push his case for a return to the national team, saying he intends to make the most of another chance at the top level.
Bangladesh HP are preparing for the nine-team tournament, which will be played in Darwin from Aug. 21-30.
“Alhamdulillah, it is a new opportunity for me,” Rahman said during a media session following training. “It doesn’t mean that it is my last opportunity. But I have taken it positively, and it can be my opportunity to make a comeback. I will definitely take it positively, and I will try to utilise it.”
Rahman said Bangladesh’s recent Test success in Australia had also provided a lift, describing the result as a significant moment for the country.
“I definitely feel proud,” he said. “To win the match in Australia and to finish the match in four days is a big achievement for us.”
He added: “I have watched the match as an audience and I have a wonderful feeling that I am playing in the ground. It is a big achievement for us and a success. It can be a beginning for us.”
Bangladesh HP now turns its attention to the shorter format in Darwin and Rahman made clear that the team’s ambition is to win the tournament.
“If we can play well and win the cup, it will be a big achievement for us and for Bangladesh,” he said.
Asked later about his goal for the tournament, Rahman was even more emphatic.
“Obviously, to win the cup,” he said. “So, the first option is to win the cup and no second option.”
Rahman said adapting to conditions in Darwin should not be particularly difficult after spending considerable time playing in England.
“I have played in England for the last four years. The weather is similar for me,” he said. “The first practice session was good. If I can do it for the next four-five days, everything will be fine.”
Beyond the tournament itself, Rahman said his broader objective remains earning another opportunity with Bangladesh.
“It doesn’t matter if it is a tournament or not,” he said. “I want to go to the national cricket tournament. I hope everyone will pray for this.”
Rahman also welcomed the presence of experienced former Bangladesh players around the squad, saying their familiarity with the players can help the group.
“The players are known by the national coaches,” he said. “They know each and every player very well. So, it’s a very good achievement from the BCB side.”
For Rahman, however, Darwin represents both a team objective and a personal opportunity.
“This is my first year,” he said of the Top End tournament. “I hope I play well.”
