Josh Hazlewood has joined an elite group of Australian bowlers after becoming just the ninth man from his country to take 300 wickets in Test cricket.
The Australian fast bowler reached the landmark during the day three of the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, dismissing Mehidy Hasan Miraz caught behind to bring up wicket No. 300.
It was another significant moment in a Test career spanning more than a decade for a bowler whose success has been built on accuracy, bounce, movement and an ability to relentlessly challenge a batter’s technique.
Hazlewood went on to finish Bangladesh’s first innings with 6-89, taking his career tally beyond the landmark to 301 wickets as the tourists were eventually dismissed for 426.
From Tamworth to 300 Test wickets
Born Josh Reginald Hazlewood in Tamworth, New South Wales, on January 8, 1991, Hazlewood made his Test debut against India at the Gabba in Brisbane in December 2014.
He could hardly have asked for a better introduction to Test cricket.
Hazlewood claimed 5-68 in India’s first innings, becoming an immediate threat in an Australian attack already containing some outstanding fast-bowling talent.
More than a decade later, the qualities evident on debut remain central to his success.
At 196cm tall, Hazlewood combines natural bounce with exceptional control. Rather than relying solely on outright speed, his ability to repeatedly hit a demanding line and length and generate seam movement has made him effective in different conditions around the world.
Among Australia’s greatest bowlers
Reaching 300 wickets puts Hazlewood alongside some of the biggest names in Australian cricket history.
Shane Warne remains Australia’s leading Test wicket-taker with 708, followed by Nathan Lyon (568) and Glenn McGrath (563).
Mitchell Starc has 435 wickets, Dennis Lillee finished with 355, while Pat Cummins (316), Mitchell Johnson (313) and Brett Lee (310) are also ahead of Hazlewood on the all-time Australian list.
Hazlewood became the ninth Australian to reach 300, achieving the landmark in his 77th Test.
At the point he reached 300, Hazlewood had a Test bowling average of 24.10, an economy rate of 2.78 and best innings figures of 6-67. He had also collected 14 five-wicket hauls.
Those figures underline the consistency that has defined his career.
Part of a formidable Australian attack
Hazlewood has also played a major role in one of Australia’s strongest modern bowling units.
Alongside Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon, he has formed part of an attack capable of succeeding at home and overseas.
The longevity of that combination is reflected in a remarkable statistic: Hazlewood, Cummins, Starc and Lyon have all now passed 300 Test wickets.
Hazlewood’s international journey actually began four years before his Test debut. He made his ODI debut against England at Southampton in June 2010 and his T20I debut against West Indies in Brisbane in February 2013.
But Test cricket has provided some of the defining moments of his career.
From taking five wickets on debut at the Gabba to raising the ball in Darwin after joining the 300 club, Hazlewood has established himself among Australia’s most successful fast bowlers.
