Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan marked only his second Test appearance with a memorable maiden century, producing a composed 101 against Australia at Marrara Stadium in Darwin.
The left-hander played a crucial role in putting Bangladesh in a strong position after Australia were bowled out for just 198 on the opening morning of the first Test. Opening the innings, Tanzid showed patience and maturity against the Australian attack and helped Bangladesh move past the hosts’ first-innings total to take the lead.
Tanzid reached three figures before eventually falling for 101 off 197 deliveries, caught by Mitchell Starc off the bowling of Nathan Lyon. His innings included eight fours and one six, with the opener scoring at a strike rate of 51.26.
It was a significant milestone for the 25-year-old, who had played only one Test before arriving in Darwin. Tanzid made his Test debut against Pakistan at Sylhet in May 2026, scoring 26 and four in his two innings. Just a few months later, he has his first Test hundred to his name and against Australia on their home soil.
While Tanzid is still at the beginning of his Test career, he is already an established member of Bangladesh’s white-ball setup. Since making his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in the 2023 Asia Cup, he has scored 1,044 runs in 40 ODIs, including a century and nine fifties.
He has also featured in 53 T20 internationals, accumulating 1,331 runs at an average of 28.31 and a strike rate of 127.24, with 13 half-centuries.
His innings in Darwin, however, represents a major step forward in the longest format.
Facing Australia away from home is one of the toughest assignments for any young opening batter, but Tanzid displayed the temperament required for Test cricket. His maiden hundred not only gave Bangladesh a valuable first-innings advantage but also provided an early glimpse of what could be a promising Test career.
