Melbourne, 3 September 2025:
Ravichandran Ashwin could become the first high-profile Indian cricketer to play in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), with discussions underway between the veteran spinner and Cricket Australia (CA), according to Cricbuzz.
CA chief executive Todd Greenberg confirmed he has spoken with Ashwin following the 38-year-old’s retirement from the Indian Premier League last week. Ashwin had hinted at exploring opportunities in various T20 leagues, and the BBL may become his first stop as a freelance player.
“To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels,” Greenberg told Cricbuzz. “He’s a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer.”
Details, including the number of matches and which club he might represent, are still being worked out. Sources suggested a possible move to Melbourne if a deal materializes. While most BBL teams have already spent the bulk of their salary cap, CA is considering creative solutions, including bespoke financial arrangements similar to the match-by-match contracts David Warner received in the past.
Ashwin’s involvement would be a landmark for the league, which has often struggled to attract top overseas stars. An Indian player of his stature — a World Cup winner and multiple IPL champion — would not only boost the BBL’s global profile but also attract South Asian audiences and potential investors.
According to Cricbuzz, Ashwin has also expressed interest in using the stint to further his coaching ambitions and may explore media or broadcast opportunities alongside playing. His entry into the BBL could also pave the way for other elite Indian cricketers to consider overseas leagues once their IPL commitments end.
