Canberra, 28 October 2025:
India captain Suryakumar Yadav said his team is refreshed and ready to embrace the challenge of Australian conditions as they prepare for the five-match T20I series starting Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters in Canberra, Suryakumar said the squad’s focus has shifted fully from past tournaments to adapting and performing in the present series.
“The Asia Cup is long gone. We’ve regrouped well, the atmosphere is good, and the boys are enjoying their cricket. We’re looking forward to this tournament,” he said.
On Nithish Reddy’s fitness, Suryakumar confirmed that all-rounder Nithish Reddy, who is recovering from a quadriceps injury, is progressing well.
“He’s doing fine. He ran and batted in the nets yesterday. Today was an optional session but he came along to stay with the group. He looks good,” he said.
On personal form, despite an inconsistent run with the bat in recent months, Suryakumar remained unfazed.
“I’ve been working really hard — before and now. I’ve had good sessions at home and here as well. I’m in a good space. Runs will come eventually, but my focus is on what the team needs in different situations,” he said.
On the series and World Cup build-up, asked whether the series serves as preparation for the T20 World Cup, Suryakumar said the team views it as part of a continuing process.
“The preparation started during the Asia Cup. The conditions here are different, but our combinations are similar — one fast bowler, one all-rounder, three spinners. It’s about adapting to bounce and pace here. We’re not treating this as a separate challenge,” he explained.
On fielding and team culture, the India captain emphasised the importance of energy and bonding on the field.
“Fielding is where all eleven come together. Creating a positive atmosphere is vital, no matter how the game is going. Even if the other team’s on top, good fielding can change the match,” he said.
He praised the team’s collective spirit, noting that optional sessions have seen full attendance.
“That shows how committed the players are. We’re working hard to be among the best fielding units in the world,” he added.
On leadership and selection with India boasting a deep pool of players, Suryakumar called it “a good headache.”
“There’s competition everywhere — fast bowlers, spinners, all-rounders. But everyone understands the team’s goal: to win for India. Sometimes combinations change, but the mindset stays the same,” he said.
He added that his approach as captain is to keep communication open.
“I make sure I’m friends with everyone. Only eleven can play, but anyone’s opportunity can come anytime. That’s the message — stay ready,” he said.
On Bumrah and Australia’s challenge, Suryakumar lauded Jasprit Bumrah’s influence, especially in the powerplay overs.
“He’s been outstanding. He knows how to prepare and perform here. It’s always a challenge facing Australia in the powerplay, but we’re ready,” he said.
The series marks India’s only T20 assignment in non-Asian conditions ahead of next year’s World Cup and Suryakumar welcomed the challenge.
“It’s a beautiful country to play cricket in. The conditions are challenging but exciting. Five T20s here — it’s going to be fun,” he said with a smile.
