Melbourne, 7 October 2025:
Mitchell Starc has returned to Australia’s ODI squad for the three-match series against India beginning Oct. 19 in Perth.
Alongside the veteran fast bowler, Matthew Short and Mitchell Owen have also been recalled to the 15-man squad after recovering from a side strain and concussion, respectively. Matthew Renshaw has earned a call-up following strong domestic form.
Mitchell Marsh will continue to captain the side, with Pat Cummins opting out of the white-ball assignment to focus on his fitness ahead of the Ashes, which begin Nov. 21.
Cricket Australia also announced the squad for the first two matches of the five-game Twenty20 series against India, scheduled from Oct. 29 to Nov. 8, as part of preparations for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup.
This will be Starc’s first appearance of the season after missing the South Africa series to manage his workload ahead of the Ashes. The left-arm pacer retired from T20 internationals earlier this year.
Marnus Labuschagne, Sean Abbott, Aaron Hardie and Matthew Kuhnemann — all part of the ODI squad in August against South Africa — have been left out.
Alex Carey will miss the opening ODI in Perth due to Sheffield Shield commitments with South Australia but will return for the final two matches. Renshaw’s selection marks his first ODI appearance since 2022.
The squad includes Travis Head, Josh Inglis, and all-rounders Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green and Marsh. The pace attack features Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis, while Adam Zampa remains the sole specialist spinner. Bartlett and Dwarshuis are also expected to add lower-order depth with the bat.
Green will rejoin Western Australia after the ODI leg to prepare for the Ashes.
Inglis, Ellis back in T20I squad; Maxwell still sidelined
Josh Inglis and Nathan Ellis return to the T20I squad — Inglis from a calf injury and Ellis after missing the Chappell-Hadlee series for the birth of his first child. Glenn Maxwell remains unavailable with a wrist injury sustained in training.
Josh Philippe and Carey miss out from the T20I squad that faced New Zealand earlier this year. Inglis is expected to take the wicketkeeping duties.
The T20 batting lineup includes Head, Marsh, Tim David, Inglis, Short and Owen, with Marcus Stoinis retaining his spot. The pace group consists of Dwarshuis, Bartlett, Hazlewood and Ellis, while Zampa and Kuhnemann are the spinners.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chair George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build-up to the World Cup next year, but we’re also balancing that with preparation for the upcoming Test series.”
