South Africa thrash India by 408 runs to seal historic series win

Guwahati, 26 November 2025:

South Africa completed a dominant 2-0 sweep over India, winning the second Test by 408 runs, India’s heaviest defeat by runs at the country’s newest Test venue. The victory also marked South Africa’s first Test series win in India in 25 years.

South Africa posted 489 in the first innings, led by Senuram Muthusamy’s 109 and Marco Jansen’s 93, before declaring their second innings at 260 for 5 with Tristan Stubbs top-scoring on 94. India replied with 201 and 140, falling well short as Simon Harmer and Jansen dismantled the batting lineup.

Harmer, who had endured a seven-year Test exile after a difficult 2015 tour of India, orchestrated the collapse with match figures that secured him 17 wickets at an average of 8.94 – the best by any bowler in a Test series in India. Jansen added 12 wickets at 10.08 and contributed heavily with the bat, capping the match with a spectacular one-handed running catch to end India’s innings.

India’s troubles began early in the series and deepened after captain Shubman Gill’s injury in Kolkata. South Africa, led by undefeated Test captain Temba Bavuma, now sit at 75% in the WTC standings.

South Africa began the final day needing eight wickets, with the pitch offering turn and natural variation.

Night-watchman Kuldeep Yadav and Sai Sudharsan survived early chances, including a no-ball dismissal and a dropped catch. Harmer soon broke through, bowling Kuldeep with an off break that held its line, then removing Dhruv Jurel in the same over.

Rishabh Pant fell to extra bounce from Harmer, and Sudharsan was dismissed shortly after tea. Harmer, rested briefly, returned to strike twice more by removing Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Aiden Markram collected his ninth catch of the match, surpassing Ajinkya Rahane’s world record.

Ravindra Jadeja resisted with a composed half-century but was stumped off Keshav Maharaj after abandoning his trademark celebration. India folded soon after.

Jansen delivered the final moment of brilliance with a running, diving, over-the-shoulder catch, sealing both the match and a landmark series win for South Africa.
