Faisalabad, 5 November 2025:
Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan expressed his delight after guiding Pakistan to a thrilling two-wicket victory over South Africa in the first ODI at Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium, the venue’s first international match in 17 years. Rizwan’s composed 55 helped the hosts chase down a tricky target in testing conditions.
Reflecting on the decision to bowl first, Rizwan said the team had factored in the evening dew.
“We decided to bowl because we knew the dew would play a role later in the game,” Rizwan said. “At times, these decisions can be seen negatively if things don’t go our way, but as a team we backed our plan and stuck together.”
Rizwan acknowledged that both sides found batting difficult due to the unpredictable surface.
“Everyone knows the conditions were very tough,” he said. “The pitch wasn’t easy, some balls were skidding, others were bouncing or gripping. Both teams struggled at times, but we tried to adapt and learn from our mistakes. Hopefully, next time we can finish the job more cleanly.”
He also spoke about the atmosphere in Faisalabad and what hosting an international match after so many years meant for players and fans alike.
“Playing in front of this crowd was special,” Rizwan said. “Whether it’s Faisalabad, Peshawar, Quetta or Lahore, people everywhere in Pakistan love cricket. When international teams come here, they can feel that passion. Even the South African players were surprised by the energy and support in the stadium.”
When asked about his consistent performances and future ambitions, Rizwan credited his success to hard work and faith.
“Whatever I’ve achieved is purely by the grace of Allah and through hard work,” he said. “I don’t think too much about selection or personal milestones. My focus is always on giving my best whenever I get an opportunity.”
Rizwan said the team enjoyed the occasion without adding extra pressure on themselves.
“It was a great feeling to play international cricket in front of a packed stadium,” he said. “With nearly 17,000 fans cheering and the whole country watching, you can’t treat it as just another match. It was emotional and motivating at the same time.”
