Rain washes out series decider as England, South Africa draw T20I series

Nottingham, 14 September 2025:

The deciding Twenty20 between England and South Africa at Trent Bridge was abandoned without a ball bowled Sunday, leaving the three-match series tied 1-1.

Persistent rain delayed the scheduled 2:30 p.m. start, and play was eventually called off around 4:20 p.m. without the toss taking place.

South Africa had taken the opener in a rain-shortened game last week before Harry Brook’s England side levelled the series with a record-breaking win at Old Trafford.

“It was an amazing game the other night, so it’s a shame the weather has ruined it again,” Brook said. “We only played one T20 game, which is disappointing, but the way we played was phenomenal. To do that against a very strong South Africa side gives us a lot of confidence going forward.”

South Africa captain Aiden Markram said his team was frustrated but keeping its focus on bigger goals.
“You want to win. Today was an exciting opportunity because it was a must-win game — not quite like a World Cup but as close as you can get,” Markram said. “Frustration with the weather, but not much we could do about it. It’s about improving and building towards the World Cup.”

The washout ended England’s home summer, though a second-string squad led by Jacob Bethell will tour Ireland for three T20Is beginning Wednesday. England’s white-ball team will then travel to New Zealand in October for three ODIs and three T20Is.
