NSW’s Joel Davies handed five-match ban for lewd send-off

Sydney, 17 October 2025:

New South Wales and Sydney Sixers all-rounder Joel Davies has been handed a five-match suspension after being charged over an alleged lewd send-off during a Sydney first-grade match.

The incident occurred during Sunday’s T20 game between Sydney University and Manly Warringah, when the 22-year-old appeared to thrust his hips toward a dismissed batter who had been stumped by wicket-keeper Jay Lenton.

Although umpires did not report the incident, Cricket NSW later charged Davies with a Level 2 breach of the code of conduct. He accepted the sanction, which includes three matches suspended and will serve the ban once he recovers from a minor hamstring injury.

Cricket NSW said Davies’ penalty was increased because of prior on-field disciplinary issues over the past two seasons.

It was reported, Davies told officials he was not imitating a sexual gesture but rather mimicking NBA star Joel Embiid’s “D-X crotch chop” celebration.

Davies, the younger brother of fellow NSW player Ollie Davies, has played eight Big Bash League games for the Sixers since his 2023 debut, scoring 42 runs and taking one wicket. He was named in the NSW second XI squad for this week’s match against South Australia in Adelaide but did not play due to injury.
