Rawalpindi, 19 October 2025:
South Africa captain Aiden Markram said his side is determined to level the two-match series when they take on Pakistan in the second Test starting Monday at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The World Test Championship title holders lost the opening match in Lahore by 93 runs.
Markram confirmed the return of experienced left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, calling his inclusion “a major boost.” “He’s fit, that’s why he’s here,” Markram said. “He brings a lot of experience and skill to the group and it’s great having him back.”
The captain said South Africa have learned from their struggles against spin in the first Test, where 15 of their wickets fell to Pakistan’s slow bowlers. “We’re expecting more spin here as well,” he said. “We’ve done our homework and discussed new plans to counter that. It’s about improving from the first game and giving ourselves a real chance in these conditions.”
Markram, who scored a century at this venue in 2021, said he would look to draw confidence from that innings but adapt quickly. “Conditions will be different this time, but it’s about backing your plans and trusting your game,” he said.
He added that the squad has leaned on insights from Tony de Zorzi and wicket-keeper Ryan Rickelton, who both spent time at the crease in Lahore. “We’ve had good conversations as a batting group about how to handle spin. Hopefully those talks will translate into better execution.”
On his own form, Markram said: “I’m feeling good and hungry to contribute. It’s about leading from the front and fighting hard for the team.”
