Konstas focused on learning from setbacks ahead of Ashes

Sydney, 10 September 2025:

Teenager Sam Konstas says learning to deal with failure is central to his preparations for the Ashes after a difficult run of scores tested the early momentum of his Test career.

The 19-year-old batter was back in the nets at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday, working on his game as he bids to keep his place at the top of Australia’s order for the first Ashes Test against England in Perth this November, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Konstas made headlines with a blistering 60 off 65 balls on debut in the Boxing Day Test against India last year, but has since struggled for consistency, including on the recent tour of the West Indies. He will get his next chance to impress when Australia A faces India A in two four-day matches in Lucknow starting next week.

“To be honest, I think in sports or in jobs, you’re going to fail, and how you respond to that and try to improve as a person while trying to get better is what matters,” Konstas said. “At 19 years old, I’m just trying to cherish the moments and experiences that I have.”

Konstas credited mentor Shane Watson, batting coach Tahmid and Australia coach Andrew McDonald with helping him refine his game. McDonald told SEN Radio in August that the youngster is working to balance his natural aggression with stronger fundamentals.

After the Australia A tour, which also features three 50-over matches, Konstas will have further chances to stake his claim for Ashes selection in Sheffield Shield fixtures in October.
