Kabul, 4 November 2025:
Jonathan Trott will step down as Afghanistan’s head coach after the 2026 T20 World Cup in March, the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced Monday.
“ACB recognises that coaching transitions are a natural part of the global cricketing ecosystem,” the board said in a statement. “Just as teams evolve, so do their leadership and strategic needs. No international side remains under a single coach forever, and this change marks a new chapter for Afghanistan as the board continues building toward long-term excellence.”
The ACB said the decision was part of its long-term strategic planning for the next phase of the national team’s development.
Batting coach Andrew Puttick will also leave when his contract expires on Dec. 31. Puttick, who joined Afghanistan in January after a stint with Pakistan’s national team, will not be renewed.
Trott, appointed in July 2022, has guided Afghanistan through a period of steady progress in white-ball cricket. His initial 18-month contract was extended twice, through 2025.
The 2026 T20 World Cup, expected to be staged in India and Sri Lanka from Feb. 7 to March 8, will be Trott’s final assignment with the team.
