Imam pleased with Pakistan’s strong start, reflects on comeback after missing out on century

Lahore, 12 October 2025:

Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq expressed satisfaction with his team’s position after the hosts finished the opening day of the first Test against South Africa on 313 for five at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday, though he admitted disappointment at falling short of a century.

Imam, who made 88, said he was pleased to contribute to Pakistan’s solid start.

“It’s always nice to get runs, especially in front of a home crowd,” he said. “Of course, missing out on a hundred hurts, but what matters more is that the team is in a strong position.”

Reflecting on his return to international cricket after a period out of the side, Imam said the journey had taught him discipline and focus.

“There were challenges — fitness, form, and mindset — but I worked hard on my game. The goal now is consistency and helping Pakistan win matches,” he added.

The left-hander discussed the importance of partnerships, praising captain Shan Masood and others for building a steady platform.

“Partnerships are key in Test cricket. When you bat long with intent, it puts pressure on the opposition,” he said.

Looking ahead, Imam expected the surface to offer more turn.

“The pitch will get tougher for batting as the game goes on,” he noted. “We’ll need to adapt quickly and plan well.”

Imam also thanked the fans for their support, calling the atmosphere “incredible” and crediting the Pakistan Cricket Board for promoting Test cricket.
