Harmer backs South Africa to fight back after Pakistan dominate opening day in Lahore

Lahore, 12 October 2025:

South Africa off-spinner Simon Harmer remained optimistic about his team’s chances despite Pakistan’s strong start on the opening day of the first Test at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.

Pakistan reached 313 for five at stumps after opting to bat first in the opening match of the two-Test series, part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27. Harmer, who took one wicket for 75 runs, dismissed Pakistan captain Babar Azam for 43.

Speaking after play, Harmer said South Africa’s bowlers stuck to their plans on a surface that offered little early assistance.

“The pitch didn’t deteriorate as much as we expected,” he said. “There was some turn and bounce, but it stayed pretty good for batting. We expect it to get lower and offer more to the spinners as the game goes on.”

Harmer defended the team’s decision to field three spinners, saying it was the right call given conditions.

“The toss and the nature of the pitch played a big role in our selection,” he said. “We wanted to make sure we had options as the game progresses.”

Acknowledging Pakistan’s disciplined batting, Harmer praised their approach but remained confident.

“They batted really well, especially using the sweep and paddle. But if we can take early wickets tomorrow and keep them under 400, we’ll be right in the game.”

South Africa are the reigning World Test Championship holders after winning the 2023–25 cycle.
