Glenn Maxwell hopeful of India T20 return after wrist surgery

Melbourne, 9 October 2025:

Australia and Melbourne Stars allrounder Glenn Maxwell says he could be back playing international cricket within a month after undergoing surgery on his fractured right wrist.

The 36-year-old had the operation last week following a training mishap in Mount Maunganui before Australia’s T20 series against New Zealand. Maxwell said he opted for surgery to accelerate his recovery and give himself a chance to feature in the back half of the upcoming BKT Tyres T20I series against India.

“Having the surgery last week gives me a little more hope of playing some part of that India series if I can get myself right,” Maxwell told reporters Thursday at the KFC BBL kit launch in Melbourne. “The options were to miss that series completely without surgery or have the operation and give myself a slim chance. So I took that.”

Australia has not named Maxwell in the squad for the first two T20Is later this month but could recall him for the final three matches starting Nov. 2. Maxwell had the cast on his arm removed Wednesday and has begun basic movement exercises.

A mid-series return would suit Australia as they balance preparations for February’s T20 World Cup with red-ball build-up for the Ashes. Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has indicated he may play a Sheffield Shield match before the five-Test series against England, while Travis Head and Josh Inglis could also feature in domestic matches beginning Oct. 28 and Nov. 10.

Maxwell is expected to be available for the Stars’ opening match of BBL|15 on Dec. 18. He is unlikely to play in Victoria’s Sheffield Shield campaign but could return for their final One-Day Cup fixture on Dec. 2 against Western Australia.

The setback adds to a string of injuries for Maxwell, who continues to manage issues from a broken leg suffered at a friend’s birthday party and a concussion sustained after falling from a golf cart during the 2023 World Cup.

“It was just an unlucky incident,” Maxwell said of the training accident, when he was struck on the arm by a Mitchell Owen straight drive under an indoor marquee in New Zealand. “It happens a bit — I was probably just unlucky with where it hit. It just came back too quick. It’s not fun.”
