Azhar Mahmood confident ahead of Rawalpindi Test, urges Pakistan to maintain consistency

Rawalpindi, 19 October 2025:

Pakistan’s interim red-ball head coach Azhar Mahmood said his side is determined to build on their 93-run victory in Lahore as they face South Africa in the second and final Test of the series starting Monday at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Mahmood said the team had reflected on its lapses in the first Test, particularly the cluster of wickets that fell quickly in both innings. “We have discussed and worked on that area. The plan is to make sure we don’t repeat those mistakes,” he said. “This pitch looks on the dry side and we’ll decide the final XI in the morning after assessing the conditions.”

He praised the bowlers for executing the Lahore plan effectively, particularly the use of reverse swing. “Our decision to play two seamers worked well. For this Test, one or two changes are possible, but not many,” he said.

On the significance of the World Test Championship, Mahmood said every match holds value. “Winning this series will boost our confidence. Results are never guaranteed, but we must focus on winning sessions and staying consistent in our basics,” he added.

Mahmood also addressed Pakistan’s approach at home. “The goal is simple, take 20 wickets. Whether that comes through spin or pace depends on the conditions,” he said. “Every team uses home advantage; our aim is to play to our strengths.”

He acknowledged South Africa’s likely resurgence with the return of left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj. “We know the challenges, Maharaj, Rabada, their quality attack. We’ve prepared well. Now it’s about execution.”
