Australia fielding ‘weakest’ Ashes side since 2010

London, 15 October 2025:

Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad believes Australia are heading into this winter’s Ashes with their weakest team since 2010.

Broad made the remarks in response to former Australia opener David Warner’s prediction that England would lose the series 4-0.

“It’s very, very difficult to win in Australia as an England side, or any side — it just is,” Broad said on the For the Love of Cricket podcast on BBC Sounds. “Australia have to be massive favorites. They’re brilliant at home. But they’ve got question marks over their team and over the fitness of captain Pat Cummins.”

England’s last series win in Australia came in 2010-11, when Broad was part of the squad that claimed a 3-1 victory to retain the urn. Since then, England have endured heavy 5-0, 4-0, and 4-0 defeats on their last three tours.

Broad, who retired after the 2023 Ashes in England that ended 2-2, said this winter’s series could be different. “It’s probably the worst Australian team since 2010, when England last won, and it’s the best English team since 2010,” he said. “Those things match up to make it a brilliant Ashes series.”

Cummins has not played since July because of a lumbar stress injury and has said he is “less likely than likely” to be fit for the first Test in Perth on Nov. 21. His absence would leave Australia relying on Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland — all in their mid-30s — with limited backup options.

“Australia have been so consistent for a long period that you always knew who was playing where,” Broad said. “They don’t have that anymore. England have a great chance of being very good, and Australia have a decent chance of being bad. I don’t think anyone could argue it’s their weakest team since 2010 — it’s just a fact.”
